Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — In a proclamation dated Aug. 21, Chief Election Officer, Dr. Lealofi Uiagalelei officially declared that midterm election in the territory will be 6:00 am to 6:00 pm on Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2018.

The Election Office usually releases the sites of the designated polling stations — mostly church halls — prior to Election Day.

The usual number of polling stations is 44, based on past elections.

Midterm elections are for American Samoa's delegate to Congress and the 20 elected members of the local House of Representatives, said Uiagalelei, adding that terms for these offices commence January 3, 2019 and expire January 3, 2021.

Electors will also cast ballots on referendum to amend the Constitution, which seeks to give the Fono the authority to override a veto by the governor instead of the US Secretary of Interior.

Uiagalelei shared with Samoa News yesterday, other election news. For example, candidates running for US Delegate and local House races have until 4:30pm on Sept. 1st as required by law, to file their papers for candidacy.

Although Sept. 1 is a Saturday, Uiagalelei said the Election Office will be open until 4:30 pm to accommodate the deadline.

He added that voter registration is still ongoing and those who have already registered may pick up their Voter IDs at the Election Office. Furthermore, applications for poll workers will be available on Monday, August 27, 2018.
