Washington, DC — A combined $2 million in federal funds is being made available to American Samoa for security purposes in three different preparedness grants through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Congresswoman Aumua Amata welcomed the grants saying, “I’m pleased to inform you that the Homeland Security Department and FEMA are providing over $2 million in preparedness grants that will help fund security programs in American Samoa. These local investments are great news for our Territory, and federal support like this is necessary for operations that would otherwise be too expensive,” she said.

The grant amounts are as follows: $1 million through the State Homeland Security Program (SHSP); another $100,000 under the Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NSGP); and $907, 271 under the Emergency Management Performance Grant (EMPG) program.

The EMPG, authorized by Congress, in the Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act assists States and Territories in preparing for a variety of hazards. The SHSP was authorized by Congress in the Homeland Security Act, and provides training, equipment, planning and other response preparation to catastrophic events.

Finally, American Samoa is eligible to apply for funds in FY 2019 under the Operation Stonegarden (OPSG) program, which enhances security at all US travel and entry points, including international water borders.

“Congratulations to all those serving as first responders and law enforcement, as these grants recognize the importance of your daily work,” continued Congresswoman Amata. “Congratulations to director Samana Semo Ve'ave'a, and a special thank you to acting DHS Secretary Kevin McAleenan and acting FEMA Administrator Pete Gaynor and all other federal officials involved for including our islands in this federal support.”
