Local Homeland Security issues statement about Boston bombings

Authorities in American Samoa say there are no known or credible threats to the territory following yesterday’s bombings during the Boston Marathon in the U.S.

In a statement issued last night, the territory’s Department of Homeland Security said  American Samoa sends prayers and deepest thoughts to the people in Boston and especially those affected by this horrific event.

It says that American Samoa should remain calm and continue with their normal activities as there are “no known or credible threats in the territory tied to the events in Boston.”

Yesterday’s tragic events “are an unfortunate reminder that we must remain vigilant in today’s world. As the territory prepares for the Flag Day celebration, all residents have an important role in protecting everyone from events like this,” the statement says.

Anyone currently in American Samoa but is a resident of Boston or anyone with family and friends in Boston who have been unable to reached them can call the following phone number: (617) 635-4500.

Tomorrow marks the 113th year since American Samoa became part of the United States family. The one-day celebration includes a fautasi race; parade, traditional song and dance activities.
