Lions Park Veterans Tennis Club visits Chanel

More than 20 members and supporters of the American Samoa Lions Park Veterans Tennis club will spend the long President’s Day weekend in Samoa playing tennis against the Chanel tennis club at Moamoa.

This is the second leg of this event between the two clubs. Chanel was here last November and the Lions Park club’s weekend trip to Apia is a continuation of the long and friendly relationship between the two tennis clubs.

The contingent from American Samoa will be led by president, Herman Popeye Thomsen and will include the American Samoa Tennis Association president, Billy Young and others. Many local tennis players will leave on Thursday morning, February 16 arriving in Apia half an hour later on Friday, February 17. The two-day tournament will start on the date the visitors arrive in Samoa, according to president Thomsen.

The Lions Park Club won the November clash against Chanel when Herman and his team hosted the Apia travelers. The Moamoa based club will be in full force this time around and will have an advantage of having the tournament played at its courts.

Meanwhile, the Chanel tennis club is preparing to host the biggest Oceania Veterans tennis tournament in June this year. The competition will coincide with Samoa’s celebration of 50 years of independence.

According to an invitation received by the Lions Park Club, the competition will start on June 5 and will go on for four days. Chanel is the defending champion and has invited at least 20 teams from around the South Pacific to take part.

Teams are expected from New Zealand, Australia, Tonga, Fiji, and the two Samoa. The Lions Park and the Palm Court clubs from here are set to take teams there in June.
