Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — American Samoan award wining film director, Queen Mele Le’iato Tuiasosopo Muhammad Ali with her husband Hakeem Khaaliq, also an award wining film maker, visited Samoa News late yesterday morning following a courtesy visit to the Governor’s Office. Ali and Khaaliq are on island for more than a week and have planned several activities.

During the Indigenous Peoples Movement March on Jan. 18th in Washington D.C., Ali shared with an international audience issues affecting American Samoa and the Pacific — diabetes and obesity.

In December 2017, Ali’s “Manuia Samoa” project was one of only 23 projects from across the country that was awarded funding by the US-based ArtPlace America group.

The proposed “Manuia Samoa” is a solar-powered, social wellness hub designed by combining traditional Samoan interior design with contemporary tsunami-resistant architectural standards. (See Samoa News Dec. 10, 2017 edition for details.)
