Lifting of emergency regulations no surprise for Fiji editor

A senior Fiji broadcast journalist says there is little surprise in the interim government’s announcement that the public emergency regulations are to be lifted this Saturday.

Vijay Narayan, who is the editor of Fiji Communications Limited, says there had been indications that more openness was on the cards as consultations on a new constitution were planned.

He says at the private radio station where he works, bulletins have only being checked once a day in recent months and more information was deemed acceptable by the censors.

“There was an easing-off period going into this time when the PER would be lifted, and of course we’ll see on January 7th how things will go from there on.”
