It starts today! Flag Day Week activities

This Friday, April 17, 2015, American Samoa will celebrate Flag Day with special activities that include honorable mention for our men and women - both past and present - in the US Armed Services.

In his Flag Day proclamation, Governor Lolo Matalasi Moliga wrote, “we embrace and commemorate the service by our people in the Armed Forces to the United States, as they protect and further the freedoms and values that we as Americans, and American Samoans, hold to be dear and self evident, both at home and abroad, in times of peace and of conflict, and whether on land or sea, or in the air.”

Lolo is calling on the people and government of American Samoa “to recognize and pay tribute to the generations of our people, to those who have passed, to our living veterans, and to those on active duty services today for their honor, loyalty, dedication, and sacrifice in service to the territory of American Samoa and to the United States of America.”

This year, former and current military servicemen and women, and their families, have been invited to perform during the pese and siva entertainment portion of the Flag Day program.

The activities for this week kick off with the church service today followed by the Flag Day Performing Arts Festival, set to begin Monday and end Wednesday, the same dates as the 2Samoas Trade Fair & Fashion Show Gala. Both will be held at the Suigaula ole Atuvasa Beach Park in Utulei.

The Trade Fair will provide a great platform for all entrepreneurs to network and create business partnerships. This will strengthen the business opportunities between the 2Samoas which would feed into the development of an Economic Agreement between the two countries.

BlueSky Communications, last week, donated $10,000 and telecommunication services to help ensure the success of the 2Samoas Trade Fair, which the company describes as an important part of the ongoing efforts of the private sectors and governments in American Samoa and Samoa to promote trade and economic cooperation between the two islands.

More than 50 vendors from both Samoas are expected to showcase their goods and services during the Trade Fair, all of which will culminate with a Fashion Show on Friday night, April 17 at the Governor H. Rex Lee Auditorium in Utulei.

Everyone is invited to attend.

The Trade Fair coincides with the territory’s celebration of its 115th Flag Day, during which Samoa will play a big role, with Don Bosco Catholic School taking part in the fautasi race, as well as performing a siva and pese during the entertainment segment of the program. Also, sporting teams for boxing, volleyball and rugby are also here to go head to head with local clubs.
