It’s Tafuna versus Samoana in Girls Volleyball Championship

The stage has been set with the line being drawn in the American Samoa High School Athletic Association (ASHSAA) girls volleyball league, as the #4 seeded Samoana Sharks will be battling it out with the defending champions- the #2 seeded Tafuna Warriors- (at THS), to see who will be the 2011-2012 ASHSAA Girls Varsity Volleyball Champions. This past Wednesday evening at the Tafuna high school gymnasium the #3 seeded Faga'itua Vikings traveled all of the way to Tafuna to take on the #2 Warriors to try and reach the championships. Before screaming and enthusiastic fans, which were divided about evenly for each team, both teams laid it all on the line with their best effort. In the first set, the Warriors came out strong and started off by scoring the first 5 points. The Vikings were able to keep close, but kept trailing throughout the set. First set went to the Warriors 17-13.In the second set, the Vikings came out strong and fast and never looked back, as they scored the first 9 points and kept the pressure on throughout, to take the second set 17-7.In the final set, the Warriors showed why they were last year's champions and wanted to hold to that title, as they came strong once more, despite a great effort from the Vikings that kept the game going back and forth until the last tie when the set was tied at 9 apiece. The Warriors then scored six unanswered to take the set and game, 15-9.The #2 seeded Warriors, will now be playing against the underdogs and surprise team, the #4 seeded team, the Samoana Sharks, when they meet today at 4:00 p.m. for the game which will decide the 2011-2012 American Samoa High School Athletic Association Girls Volleyball Championship. The venue once again will be Tafuna High School. The Warriors will try to hang on to their title in this championship match up, as they are not only the defending champions in the Varsity division, but in the Junior Varsity as well. The Sharks on the other hand, were not only able to knock out the #1 seeded Leone Lions from the playoffs, but they did it in Leone. Both teams will have momentum going into this championship title game.... the Warriors as defending champions and the Sharks as the team that can beat the odds.
