Public and private sector input on Tourism Master Plan critical

The American Samoa Visitor’s Bureau has joined the Chamber of Commerce in urging the local travel and tourism industry to fully participate in creating the American Samoa Tourism Master Plan study conducted by the off-island firm RCA Consultants, whose representatives arrived yesterday.  RCA was awarded the contract that was funded by a $417,000 grant from the U.S Department of Interior. US adult smoking rate rises slightly

ATLANTA (AP) -- Cigarette smoking rose slightly for the first time in almost 15 years, dashing health officials' hopes that the U.S. smoking rate had moved permanently below 20 percent. A little under 21 percent of U.S. adults said they smoked, according to a 2008 national survey by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That's up slightly from the year before, when just 19.8 percent said they were smokers. It also is the first increase in adult smoking since 1994, experts noted. [+]

Brazil: Deforestation sees biggest drop in 20 yrs

BRASILIA, Brazil (AP) -- Deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon dropped nearly 46 percent from August 2008 to July 2009 - the biggest annual decline in two decades, the government said Thursday. Analysis of satellite imagery by the National Institute for Space Research shows an estimated 7,008 square kilometers (2,705 square miles) of forest were cleared during the 12-month period, the lowest rate since the government started monitoring deforestation in 1988.
