Hazardous surf heading to Hawaiian shores, could reach 35 feet

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The National Weather Service says the current northwest swell has reached the islands, and that swell is expected to build quickly today, with warning level surf expected for north and west facing shores of the smaller islands, and advisories for the Big Island.

Hawaii News Now - KGMB and KHNLThe swell is expected to continue to build tonight, and will coincide with high tide during the predawn hours Friday morning. This will increase chances for significant beach erosion and run-up during these hours.Surf along north facing shores will be 10 to 15 ft through mid day today then build quickly to 25 to 35 ft by late this afternoon. Surf heights will remain in this range through Friday.Surf along west facing shores will be 5 to 8 ft through mid day today then build to 15 to 25 ft by late this afternoon. Surf heights will remain in this range through Friday.A High Surf Warning is now in effect for Kauai, Oahu and Maui County until 6 p.m. Friday. The big waves will not be big enough for 'The Eddie.'The Quiksilver Eddie Aikau Invitational is a NO go today and tomorrow during the High Surf Warning.
