Hawaiian Air provides relief for long check-in lines at PPG

To alleviate long lines during check-in for local Hawaiian Airlines flights, with a third weekly flight being added during the summer time, the carrier has implemented an early check-in, which can be done during the day of the flight.

This new scheme started by word of mouth some time last month after approval by Hawaiian’s main office in Honolulu. “It has been working very well,” Hawaiian local station manager, Mitzi Semo said yesterday in a brief phone interview. “We encourage our passengers to take advantage of the early check-in.”

“To alleviate our long lines at check in, we are now performing ‘early check in’ for all passengers - including bags - from 8a.m. to 4p.m. at our sales office on the day of travel only. All passengers must be present with valid travel documents at time of check in.

Web check in is also available online,” said Semo in a memo yesterday to local authorities and the airline’s ‘valued customers’.

The memo was to announce the addition of Hawaiian’s third weekly flight between Honolulu and Pago Pago during the summer to accommodate heavy traffic. It’s during summertime when students and others off-island head down to the territory for vacation, family reunions and church conferences.

For local residents, many of them head to the U.S. for vacation and meetings, while students move off island to attend college, and still others take a break before the new school year begins sometime in August.

The third flight will kick off on June 19 and end on Aug. 21, arriving and departing Pago Pago International Airport in the evening hours - similar to the current schedule on Thursdays and Mondays. The extra incoming flight number is 1465 and the outbound is 1466, according to a media statement issued by the airline’s Honolulu office.

In addition to the extra section for the summer, the flight on Thursdays will operate on Fridays from Jun. 21 to Aug. 22, said Semo.

To ensure on-time departure, passengers are advised that counters for evening check in will close promptly at 10p.m.

Meanwhile, Hawaiian Airlines—the major corporate sponsor of the annual Samoa News Territorial Spelling Bee competition— announced Thursday that it transported 855,746 passengers last month, an increase of 10.2% from March 2012 numbers of 776,659 passengers.
