ABERCROMBIE APPOINTS NEW STATE SENATOR

HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie has appointed former state Rep. Gilbert S.C. Keith-Agaran to an open state Senate seat representing a district in Maui. Abercrombie's office announced the appointment yesterday to replace Shan Tsutsui, who became the state's lieutenant governor after Brian Schatz was appointed to U.S. Senate. Schatz replaced Daniel Inouye, who died last month. Keith-Agaran has held several public sector positions, including chair and deputy director of the Hawaii Board of Land and Natural Resources. His term representing Hawaii's 5th senatorial district begins immediately.

SWIMMER MISSING ON BIG ISLAND

HONOLULU (AP) — A swimmer is missing on the southeast side of the Big Island. The Hawaii County Fire Department began searching for the swimmer on Sunday afternoon at about 3 p.m. The Coast Guard assisted in the search, which continued until sunset. Reports were that the swimmer was swept off the cliff and into the rough waters at Kehena Beach.

UNIV UTAH FOOTBALL PLAYER SENTENCED

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A University of Utah football player from Hawaii has been sentenced to 18 months of probation for knocking a man unconscious in a bout of road rage. The Standard-Examiner reports that 24-year-old Arthur Allen Bridenstine pleaded guilty to assault for the September incident in Centerville. Bridenstine punched a 20-year-old man in a parking lot that day, knocking him unconscious. Bridenstine claims the man tried to run him off the road.

HOME PRICES SLIGHTLY DOWN, CONDOS UP

HONOLULU (AP) — Home sale prices in Honolulu were down slightly in December, but condominium sale prices were up by double digits. The Honolulu Board of Realtors said yesterday that the median price for a condominium in December was $335,000. That's up 17.5 percent over the median price in December 2011. Single family homes on Oahu were sold at a median price of $600,000 in December, down 0.8 percent from $605,000 in December 2011.
