CONGRESSIONAL GOLD MEDALS GO ON TOUR

HONOLULU (AP) — The Congressional Gold Medal awarded last year to Japanese-Americans who served in World War II is going on a national tour. An exhibition featuring the medal will open on Saturday at the National World War II Museum in New Orleans. It will then travel to museums in Honolulu, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Ore., Chicago and Houston over the next year. Irene Hirano Inouye says her late husband — U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye, who lost his right arm fighting with the 442nd Regimental Combat Team in Italy — saw the tour as an important way to tell others the story.

STATE REP SOUKI VIES FOR SPEAKER

HONOLULU (AP) — State Rep. Joseph Souki says he has the support to be the next speaker of the House. After a private caucus among Democrats on Wednesday, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser says the Maui Democrat remained confident that he will replace Speaker Calvin Say after his coalition held firm during the caucus. It was the first meeting of House Democrats since the November elections. Souki's coalition of dissident Democrats and Republicans has the votes necessary to control the House.

PEARL HARBOR BASED SUB SUSTAINS DAMAGE IN PERSIAN GULF

HONOLULU (AP) — The U.S. Navy says a Pearl Harbor-based submarine was damaged when a periscope struck an unidentified vessel in the Persian Gulf. U.S. Naval Forces Central Command says no one was hurt in the pre-dawn incident yesterday involving the USS Jacksonville. The submarine surfaced from periscope depth to see if the collision damaged the vessel, but the ship continued "on a consistent course" offering no indication of distress or acknowledgement of a collision.

3-YEAR OLD DIES IN TRAGIC INCIDENT

KAULUA-KONA, Hawaii (AP) — A 3-year-old boy died on the Big Island after falling out of the cab of a truck and being run over. Police say Joel Peter died Wednesday in an accident that occurred near the driveway of a retail establishment in North Kona. According to police, the driver of the truck, 38-year-old Petro Peter, drove his son to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. Peter has been arrested on suspicion of negligent homicide and various other vehicle-related offenses.
