Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — In honor of his lifetime of dedicated service to the people of American Samoa, the flags of the United States of America and American Samoa shall be flown at half-staff at sunrise of Thursday, June 18, 2026 through sunset of Friday, June 19, 2026.

According to Acting Governor Pulumataala Ae Ae Jr., in an executive order announcing the observance, it coincides with the return of the remains of the Honorable Senator Alo Dr. Paul Stevenson and the official ceremonies to be held in the Territory.

Senator Alo, from Fagasa, was serving his third Senate term, representing Ituau with integrity when he passed away on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, Arizona, at the age of 82. He was surrounded by his wife of 60 years, Sharon, their children and grandchildren.

His public service began as a science teacher and included roles in the Department of Education, where he expanded youth opportunities and strengthened education.

Beyond government, he held senior positions in natural resources, mining, and energy industries, contributing to economic development. He served on numerous boards, including the Territorial Bank of American Samoa and the American Samoa Chamber of Commerce, advocating for the islands' interests.

In the community, Sen. Alo is well remembered as the legendary captain of the Fealofani Samoa II fautasi — the Fagasa village vessel that he famously skippered to victory in its first appearance in the Centennial Flag Day Race in 2000 — becoming the first fautasi in history to win on debut.

Throughout his public service — as Senator, Eastern District Governor, and within the American Samoa Republican Party — Senator Alo embodied commitment to fa'a Samoa and good governance. His leadership reflected his love for American Samoa and its future.

Lowering the flags honors Senator Alo’s life and legacy, expressing gratitude and respect. His family can find comfort knowing his work will inspire future generations.
