Grandmother stoned in family dispute

A grandmother and her eight-year-old granddaughter are fighting for their lives at the Samoa national hospital following a stoning incident at the village of Faleasiu-utalast last Friday night.Suemalo Fatu Aleki, 58-year-old, of Siumu and Faleasi’u and her granddaughter, Sialofi, are at Acute Seven of the Tupua Tamasese Meaole Hospital. The grandmother and her granddaughter went to see a relative who is visiting from New Zealand at Faleasi’u when the incident happened.A disagreement between the victims’ family and a neighbour ended with the family home being allegedly stoned by the family next door.Su’emalo sustained injuries to her head and left eye while Sialofi suffered a broken arm and a dislocated shoulder. When the Samoa Observer visited the hospital yesterday, the two were in serious condition.Asked for a comment, Suemalo’s husband, Fatu Aleki said he was angry about what had happened.“I don’t understand what exactly happened in the lead up to the incident on that night but I received a phone call yesterday saying they were at the hospital,” he said.“It hurts when people close to your heart get hurt. It’s hard and takes courage to walk away from it without a fight.”Mr. Aleki said his wife and his granddaughter were helpless to stop the stoning.“She told me she was inside the house when the neighbours started stoning the house,” he said. “My granddaughter was also inside the house at the time.“I don’t understand exactly what happened but all I know is that it is not right to throw stones at a house that is full of children and elderly people.”According to the father, he received the phone call on Friday while he was in Siumu where they live.He said his wife and Sialofi were supposed to be back in Siumu yesterday.Mr. Aleki said although it is hard to forgive the people who hurt his wife and granddaughter, he said the matter is with the Police.
