Funeral services for Mrs. Susana Lutali set for June 29

Funeral services for the late former First Lady Mrs. Susana Leiato Lutali are scheduled for next week Friday after a family service next Tuesday at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Ili’ili, daughter Josie Lutali told Samoa News on Wednesday.

Mrs. Lutali, who held the matai title of Maeata’anoa of Fagaitua, passed away peacefully last week Friday at her home in Ili’ili (not at the LBJ Medical Center as reported by Samoa News last Saturday) at the age of 80. She was the wife of the late Governor A.P. Lutali.

On his weekend radio program, Gov. Togiola Tulafono said he was saddened to receive word about the passing of Mrs. Lutali, who served the people and the government of American Samoa during the tenure of Gov. Lutali.

Togiola expressed his condolences saying, “May God comfort the family during their time of grief and sadness.”

“Our mother dedicated her life to her family, church and country,” said Mrs. Lutali’s children in a funeral announcement. “Her passing leaves a deep void in our hearts and an immense appreciation for her love for family and country.”

According to the funeral announcement, published in yesterday’s edition of Samoa News, the family service will be held at the Catholic Church in Ili’ili next Tuesday from 5p.m.-8p.m.

On Friday, June 29, there will be a short prayer service at the hospital at around 7am before her remains are transported to the Catholic Church in Ili’ili for the final church service. Her remains will then be transported to her Ili’ili home where she will lie in wake for two hours for those who would like to pay their final respects and farewell.

She will be laid to rest at around 2pm the same day, next to her late husband at the family compound in Ili’ili.
