FEMA approves $800,000 in federal funding for Matu’u stream project

PAGO PAGO, American Samoa —The American Samoa Territorial Office of Fiscal Reform (TOFR) has recently been informed by the US DHS Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) that the American Samoa Government will receive over $800,000 in federal funding for the Matu’u Stream Project. The project will address mitigation of the Afuelo Stream to help reduce any damages to Public & Private Property, and to prevent the risk of loss of life.

Ninety percent (90%) of the project costs are being funded from FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP), with the remaining funds provided from in- kind local resources. FEMA’s approval of the grant is a reflection of its commitment to the Territory in the recovery efforts of damages that our island sustained as a result of the 2009 Earthquake, Tsunami and Flooding incident.

Governor Togiola Tulafono extends his sincere appreciation and gratitude to both Secretary Janet Napolitano, Secretary of the US Department of Homeland Security and FEMA’s Administrator William Craig Fugate and their staff for their continuous support of not only our mitigation projects but all programs awarded to American Samoa from USDHS. He further commends the efforts of the Governor’s Authorized Representative (GAR) in partnership with TOFR and the Department of Public Works to help move these vital projects forward and assist our people and territory.

The proposed project is located in the village of Matu’u, Tutuila, American Samoa and will reinforce concrete flood walls and footings in the identified sites of the flood bed of the stream.
