Martin Luther King, Jr. Day 2019

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. ~ The time is always right to do what is right ~

Congresswoman Aumua Amata reminds us as we celebrate the memory and legacy of this great civil rights leader,  “Dr. King brought people together, and changed our country for the better. This rare leader inspired people, and he understood both the power of peace and the strength of taking a stand.

"The words of his most famous speech live on, and his life reminds us to value our neighbors even in times of disagreement. His vision of peace and equality has stood the test of time, and this day is a timely reminder of all our nation can achieve with a spirit of unity.”

Rep. Amata is pictured with historic civil rights leader Rep. John Lewis (D-Georgia) on opening day of the 116th Congress.

Rep Lewis was at Dr. King's side during much of the Civil Rights movement of the 50s and 60s. Inspired by Martin Luther King Jr., he joined the burgeoning Civil Rights Movement in 1957. Lewis was a Freedom Rider, spoke at 1963's March on Washington and led the demonstration that became known as "Bloody Sunday." He was elected to Congress in 1986 and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011.
