Early voting for those qualified begins tomorrow

The Election Office in American Samoa has scheduled to start tomorrow early voting for this year’s general election but it won’t include casting ballots in the gubernatorial race, which is currently being challenged.

The list of certified candidates for public office was released last Thursday evening but the race for the offices of the governor and lieutenant governor, was not certified because of a challenged filed by candidate for governor Save Liuato Tuitele and his running mate candidate for lieutenant governor Sandra King Young.

The main argument in the challenge is that four individuals in the gubernatorial race allegedly violated local laws by publicly campaigning without first resigning from their government jobs. Until the challenge issue is resolved, following a grace period, chief election officer, Soliai Tuipine Fuimano says ballot for the gubernatorial race will not be printed.

(See tomorrow’s edition for more details on status of the “Save n Sandra” challenge and the legal action to follow by a challenger.)

Meanwhile, ballots for the certified candidates in the U.S. Congressional and the local House of Representatives races are being printed over the weekend and will be ready for tomorrow’s early voting for local absentee voters who are qualified registered voters, who resides permanently in the territory but will be traveling off island and returning after the Nov. 6 general election.

These absentee voters are on military duty, vacation, conferences or medical treatment. They will need to present to the Election Office before voting absentee, their military travel orders, airline tickets and conference schedule, or notice from a physician.
