Last Thursday, nine women graduated from the first hospitality training xourse conducted by Ms. Alanieta Lavenawasa as part of an apprenticeship with the Department of Youth and Women's Affairs (DYWA) to empower local women. 

According to DYWA Deputy Directory Pa’u Roy Ausage, the 10-week training started earlier this year on January 26 and most of the practicum was conducted at the Mapusaga Emergency Homeless Shelter, which is operated by the DYWA. 

As part of their first experience as graduates, the nine women were given the opportunity to serve the public at the Tradewinds Hotel, Equator Restaurant. 

One of the graduates, who has been working at Tradewinds Hotel for nearly a decade, spoke on behalf of her class, saying she is appreciative of the training, which has increased and elevated her skill level in performing her duties and responsibilities at work.

The nine graduates are: Adl Qutonilibasa, Sieri Lefaoseu, Nadia Li, Uiese Toreka Lemoe, Sarah Sooaemalelagi, Catherine Lemoe, Faavavau Faatau, Makerita Laumatia, and Taulaga Tatupu.

“We wish to express our appreciation and gratitude to Ms. Cathy Haleck of Tradewinds Hotel for allowing our graduates to experience real life practicum at such a prestigious business establishment,” Pa’u said.

“The hospitality training is undoubtedly needed in American Samoa,” he continued. “As we try to develop tourism through the expansion of our airline industry, hotel industry, beautification efforts, construction of hotels and adding more restaurants and food places, we must remember the component of human resources, which must be trained and be prepared to work in these places, serving our people and tourists.”

The second course will begin later this month on April 25 and will continue for ten weeks. A total of 30 slots are available and free registration can be made at the DYWA office on the second floor of the A.P. Lutali Executive Office Building in Utulei during normal business hours. Classes will be held at the Old Election Office on Mondays and Fridays from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.

“We are hopeful to partner with local hotels and restaurants to allow our students to conduct practicals and develop professional relationships in order to fill any vacant positions in the hospitality area,” Pa’u concluded.
