DOC sponsors community fair for Oceans Day

In support of the ongoing partnership with the local Chamber of Commerce, the Commerce Department has invited 15 businesses (retail/food) and 10 outreach organizations to participate in the May 12th Community Fair event - Oceans Day 2012.]

The late director of Commerce, Faleseu Eliu Paopao informed the business organization that the event commemorate the successful development of an Ocean Swim/Ocean Science (OSOS) class in a local high school, adding that the OSOS curriculum promotes swim safety, marine awareness and conservation as well as encourage educational and career interest in the field of marine safety.

“As part of this event, marathon swimmer, Bruckner Chase and six of his Ocean swim students will swim from Aunu’u to Utulei Beach Park,” the letter states, adding that this will be a 5-6 hours swim relay and expected arrival time at Utulei beach 3p.m.

This will be an all day event beginning at 9a.m. til 4:30p.m. and there will be no charge to Chamber members; however members are encourage to contribute an item towards that day’s raffle. The event coincides with Mother’s Day, on Sunday, May 21st, according to the letter.
