Defending champions Cougars make it to the ASHSAA Girls Softball Championship game

The Fa’asao Marist Cougars made it to the American Samoa High School Athletic Association (ASHSAA) Girls Softball Championship game, by defeating the Leone Lions 9- 8, this past Saturday in the playoffs. The Cougars who are seeded #2 in these playoffs, were able to down the #3 seeded Lions in perhaps one of the most exciting games of the season, that saw good hitting and better than average fielding.

The Cougars are now awaiting the winner of today’s playoff game between the Tafuna Warriors and Samoana Sharks. The #1 seeded Warriors and #4 seeded Sharks were supposed to meet last Saturday to see who would advance to the championship game, but the game had to be rescheduled to today at 4:00 p.m. at the Tony Solaita Baseball Field.

In a recap of last Saturday’s game, the Lions got on the board first in a quick start but the middle innings belonged to the Cougars as they took the lead late in the game. The Lions tried to pull out a rally, too little too late.

The Lions were the #2 team all season going into the last part of the second half of the season, when they dropped their last 3 games in the regular season, forcing them down to the #3 spot and then dropping their playoff game, making it 4 losses in a row.

In today’s playoff game, the highly favored Warriors will have their have their hands full as they take on the underdogs from Samoana, who made a late surge in the second half of the season, finding their stride just at the right time. Now the defending champion Cougars, are waiting and watching to see who they will be competing against defending their ASHSAA Girls Softball Championship Title. The championship game is slated for this coming Wednesday October 3 with a scheduled starting time of 4:00 p.m. at the Tony Solaita Baseball Field.

ASHSAA Softball Coordinator Clayton ‘Boom’ Mahuka wishes to invite the public out to both of these games in support of ASHSAA sports.
