KALAPU ALFRED, OTI  MATTHEW AND VAISAGOTE OGE

The District Court has re-scheduled the government’s case against three men accused of assaulting one man in Lauli’i early this month.

Kalapu Alfred, Oti Matthew and Vaisagote Oge are facing third degree assault and public peace disturbance charges, and all three men have denied the charges against them. According to affidavits, the incident occurred after women in the village fought and the men related to the women interfered. According to police, the defendants assaulted the male, which left him with head injuries.

The defendants, who are being represented by the Public Defender’s office, are scheduled to appear again for their pre-trial conference on February 2, 2012.

BURGLARY SPREE IN LEONE

The two men charged in connection with burglarizing a store and two other attempted burglaries at two other stores in Leone— all on the same night —will be arraigned in High Court this morning.

Ryan Pite is held on bail of $50,000 while Siaosi Va’a Jr’s bail is set at $35,000. The pair in their twenties are represented by the Public Defender’s office. Both are charged with Attempted Burglary Second Degree, Burglary First Degree, Conspiracy to Commit Burglary in the First Degree, Stealing and three misdemeanor counts of Property Damage in the Third Degree. The alleged burglaries and attempted burglaries occurred on January 10, 2012.

ELDERLY MEN FACE SEXUAL CHARGES

Two elderly men accused of having sexual contact with young girls in separate cases will be arraigned in the High Court this morning. The men, both over 60 years old, each waived their right to a preliminary examination before the District Court last week Friday.

 The first case accuses a 60-year old man of having sexual contact with a six year old girl to whom he’s related. Samoa News withheld the name of the defendant to protect the identity of the victim. It’s alleged the defendant engaged in sexual contact with the victim from August last year with the latest incident occurring early January this year. This defendant is being held on a $100,000 bail. The defendant is facing charges of Child Molestation, Rape, Sexual Abuse First Degree, Deviate Sexual Assault and Endangering the Welfare of a Child.

 The second case is against a 67-year old Siulepa Auelua of Nu’uuli, who is accused of having a sexual relationship with a 16-year old girl. Auelua is in custody on bail of $35,000. He’s facing felony charges of Statutory Rape (having sexual intercourse with a girl 16 years old or under), Sexual Abuse First Degree, Sodomy, Deviate Sexual Assault and a misdemeanor charge of Endangering Welfare of a Child.

Both men were ordered not to contact the victims, nor their family members. The pair are represented by the Public Defender’s office while prosecuting is Deputy Attorney General Mitzie Jessop-Folau.
