BLUESKY COMMUNICATIONS AWARDS PRIZES FOR HOLIDAY SEASON

Christmas came early for the ten lucky winners of the Bluesky Communications holiday extravaganza giveaway, one of the many great events the company has planned for the holiday season.

Last Friday, people from all walks of life were contacted to redeem their prizes in the Bluesky showroom. Seven of the ten winners showed up and were given the opportunity to pull their own prizes which included cold hard cash, a $250 gift certificate from KS Mart, a 40-inch flat screen television, and an iphone 5.

The winners were chosen from a pool of people whose names and phone numbers were entered into the big drawing, after texting in. When asked about how she feels, with regards to Bluesky offering wonderful prizes for its customers, one lady responded: “It’s awesome. It’s not like they only do this for Christmas, as the deals are year-round. There’s always something to win. E best lava Bluesky,” she said with a chuckle.

SPA STUDENTS RALLYING BEHIND MISS AMERICAN SAMOA

Youngsters at South Pacific Academy gathered in the school’s gymnasium last week to show their support for the reigning Ms. American Samoa Anneliese Faaitumalo Sword who will be competing for the Miss South Pacific title next month in Apia, Samoa.

Sword is a teacher at the home of the Dolphins where the support is unwavering, not only from the students, but also the faculty and staff members. Holding up a big handmade banner that reads: “SPA’s Ms. Sword for Miss South Pacific,” the youngsters seem more anxious about the pageant than Sword is.

Last week, through an advertisement in the Samoa News, Sword thanked the territory and its people for their support and said, “I am deeply honored and proud to be representing American Samoa at the upcoming Miss South Pacific pageant on December 19, in Apia, Samoa.”

Sword urges everyone to vote for her online, as the Miss Internet title is up for grabs and goes to whichever contestant racks up the most online votes.

SAMOANA HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 1984 REUNION

Fifteen of the more than 240 graduates of the Samoana High School’s Class of 1984 celebrated their 30-year reunion last Friday with a full day of the activities and fellowship.

It all kicked off at 6 a.m. when the group gathered for a special celebration of mass at the St. Joseph the Worker Co-Cathedral in Fagatogo. Afterwards, the Sharks alumni headed to DDW Beach Café for a special breakfast that was hosted on the deck. Stories were shared and laughter was heard throughout.

With everyone running on a full stomach, the group then made their way to the Ili’ili Golf Course and later in the evening, a special dinner was held at the Tradewinds Hotel in Ottoville.

According to Meauta Mageo, the goal of the reunion was to get everyone together to fellowship and mark their 30th anniversary, as 2014 is almost over. He added that while some of their classmates are residing in the territory, most are scattered off island, and four have passed away.

JROTC INSTRUCTORS WILL HEAD TO MANU’A TO HOST COMPETITION

Instructors from the Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (JROTC) program will be heading to the Manu’a Islands to conduct the cadet challenge and air rifle competition for the cadets attending Manu’a High School.

Last month, five local high schools took part in the first JROTC event for the 2014-2015 school year. The cadet challenge was held at the Veterans Memorial Stadium in Tafuna and included participation from Leone, Samoana, Kanana Fou, Tafuna, and Faga’itua High Schools, all competing in different physical activities including the one-mile run, curl-ups, pull-ups, V-sit and shuttle run.

The second event for this school year - the air rifle competition – was held last Friday at the SFC Konelio Pele Army Reserve Center and hosted by Tafuna High School. Again, the same five local high schools competed and the official results were not available as of press time yesterday.

The air rifle competition had the cadets competing in three different firing positions: lying on their stomachs, kneeling, and sitting.

Manu’a High School was unable to attend either of the two events but it is hopeful that they will participate in the third and final event, which is the drill competition set to take place in April.
