MORE TAX REFUNDS RELEASED TO EASE THE WEEKEND

The Treasury Department released Thursday more tax refund checks for those who filed up to Mar. 8 and just in time for the weekend, says Tax Office manager Melvin Joseph.

For run #10, there were 525 checks totaling $653,981 which includes $279,952 for local and $374,029 for the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) - funded by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS), said Joseph.

Over all, some 5,000 refund checks have been issued and released totaling $7.14 million, covering just over $3 million in local and $4.13 million in ACTC.  ASG officials have estimated a total payout around $10 million in tax refunds this year.

ZIONS BANK EXPECTS TO TAKE OVER ASG PAYROLL PROCESSING IN SUMMER

ASG Treasurer Dr. Falema’o ‘Phil’ Pili is looking at this summer for the Utah based Zions Bank to take over the processing of the government’s payroll, which has been handled for many years by Bank of Hawai’i, who plan to close their remaining branch by early next year.

Zions officials early last month visited the territory to discuss and finalize services it can provide for the government with the impending closure of BoH. During a news conference, the officials along with Pili announced that Zions will be taking over the processing of ASG payroll and it could be implemented within 30-days.

Since then, BoH has delayed the full closure of its local operations until March next year. BoH did, however, close its Tafuna branch in March, 2013.

Asked if Zions has taken over processing of ASG’s payroll, Pili said Thursday that he is looking at June or July for this function to be taken over by the Utah financial institution, which is also working on getting VISA brand cards for employees who get paper paychecks.

Meanwhile, Pili says ASG is still accepting BoH checks. “We will stop accepting BoH checks a couple of weeks before they leave the territory,” he added.
