REGISTRATION OPEN FOR FLAG DAY 2015 PERFORMING ARTS FESTIVAL

Registration opened yesterday and will end next Thursday for everyone interested in being part of the 2015 Flag Day Performing Arts Festival, sponsored by the American Samoa Council on Arts, Culture, and Humanities (ASCACH).

The February 19 deadline to register is already set, no exceptions.

Registration is open for any and all performers, including organizations from different ethnic backgrounds and church groups. Set criteria for performers include obeying the set time limit, gracefulness of the performers, and uniformity—among other things.

Performers will be judged by a panel made up of Arts Council board members who will decide which groups will be performing on stage this year in April.

The Performing Arts Festival will be held at the Suigaula ole Atuvasa Beach Park from April 13-16, leading up to the territory’s Flag Day celebrations set for April 17.

All interested groups need to stop by the Jean P. Haydon Museum compound in Fagatogo to register. No phone calls will be accepted.

This project is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts. More information can be obtained by contacting Rexx Yandall or Tasi Sunia at 633-4347/4490/5613.

DPS GETS PAIR OF NEW MOTORCYCLES

The Traffic Division of the Dept. of Public Safety received earlier this month two brand new motorcycles. The acquisition adds to the current fleet which consists of a handful of motorcycles used by traffic cops.

The purchase came with a price tag of over $52,000.

It was the Police Traffic Services of the DPS Office of Highway Safety that made the purchase possible, through funding from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, under the US Department of Transportation.

RENOVATION WORK ON HIGH COURT NEARLY COMPLETE

After months of labor, workers from the Maintenance and Operations (M&O) Division of the Dept. of Public Works have completed renovation work to the High Court building in Fagatogo.

M&O supervisor Sopa Una told Samoa News yesterday that the delay was due in part to the arrival of building materials that had to be shipped in from off island.

The job included the installation of new wooden rails for both the first and second floors of the High Court, in addition to the laying of new flooring for the outside deck. Deteriorated poles were also changed out.

The only thing that hasn’t yet been completed is the final paint job, which Una said has been delayed due to the constant rainy weather.
