CNMI utility company is back under emergency status

The Commonwealth Utilities Corporation in the Northern Marianas is again back under a state of emergency declaration.Governor Benigno Fitial says the CUC is owed over 8 million US dollars in unpaid obligations by the cash-strapped government, the Public School System, and the Commonwealth Healthcare Corporation.He says the company is also owed over 4 million dollars by residential users and is facing 2.6 million in accounts payable to vendors.He adds the CUC, which requires employees with specialized training, also faces a manpower crisis.The state of emergency status, effectively suspends regulations and allows the reprogramming of funds to address cash, procurement, and hiring crises.The company was first placed under emergency status on August the 1st, 2008 and that was finally lifted on March the 28th, 2011.
