Church warns Samoa Govt about casinos

“People will start to save money to play in the Casinos instead of feeding their families. The addiction will become too much; it will result in crime as people start stealing to fuel their addiction”

The National Council of Churches (NCC) has warned Prime Minister TuilaepaSa’ileleMalielegaoi against driving Samoa into “further poverty.” The warning comes from the new Chairman of NCC, Reverend KasianoLe’aupepe. Speaking to the Samoa Observer, he is fearful about the future of Samoa once the Casinos proposed by the Government are established and running. “The love of money is the root of all problems in Samoa and the world,” he says.

“The love of money and the Casino will only drive people further into poverty. “People will start to save money to play in the Casinos instead of feeding their families. The addiction will become too much; it will result in crime as people start stealing to fuel their addiction.” Gamblingopens the door to the influx of outsiders who have no fear for God.

This will shake Samoa’s foundation, Rev Le’aupepe warns. “Our country is founded on God,” hereminds.“We should hold on to that motto. “Yet Samoa is developing so fast that the church is so far behind. With all the changes in our country, I hope and pray that we remain founded on God.” Rev Le’aupepe’s opinion was sought after concerns from members of the public about the perils of gambling.

Tuilaepa did not have time to address Rev Le’aupepe’s concerns during an interview in his office on Tuesday. But he said during a previous interview that the Government is going ahead with plans to build two Casinos. One is reportedly planned for Savaii with the second one in Upolu. He said the idea behind the introduction of casinos is firstly to help towards economic growth, and secondly, as an incentive for tourists who enjoy this type of entertainment to come to Samoa.
