BGCAS TAKES PART IN NATIONAL LIGHTS ON AFTERSCHOOL EVENT

Pago Pago, AM. SAMOA — The Boys & Girls Clubs of American Samoa is proud to have taken part in the "LIGHTS ON Afterschool Programs" Event on Thursday, October 17, 2013.  This national program was organized and promoted by the National Boys & Girls Clubs of America and the Afterschool Alliance Organization.

BGCAS joined more than 8,000 afterschool programs nationwide that included more than one million Americans participating in a joint effort to promote and raise awareness about the importance of afterschool programs in our communities and throughout our nation.

Afterschool programs are proven to keep kids safe, help working families, and inspire learning.  They provide opportunities to help young people develop into successful adults.

GREAT FUTURES START HERE is the mantra of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and the Boys & Girls Clubs of American Samoa continues to operate its afterschool mentoring program by this concept.  BGCAS offers its members youth development and enrichment activities focused on ACADEMIC SUCCESS, GOOD CHARACTER & CITIZENSHIP and HEALTHY LIFESTYLES.  In line with these efforts and as part of the Lights On Event, BGCAS members, parents, management and staff organized a canned goods drive service project.  All donations of 280 food items were presented last Friday to the Fatuoaiga Hope House by BGCAS Chief Operations Officer Sailipea Kennison Barber, senior staff and junior staff mentors on behalf of  BGCAS Board of Directors, Chairman Mary A.T. Tulafono, management and members.  Sister Faustina Stowers accepted the donation on behalf of Hope House.

This marks BGCAS's second annual participation in the Lights On Event by way of organizing an Open House program.  Parents and the general public were invited to visit and tour the Clubhouse facility and learn first hand what BGCAS offers for the youth of our territory.  The Boys & Girls Clubs of American Samoa is honored this year to have one of its mentees, a junior member, Fa'avae Leomiti, featured on the national Afterschool Alliance website, afterschoolalliance.org.  Fa'avae is the son of Faitamai and Dianne Leomiti of Pava'ia'i and Nu'uuli and he attends Kanana Fou Elementary School.
