AYFS Chargers football team sends donated goods to Samoa

Last month, the Chargers football team of the AYFS Football League held a food and clothes drive with the intention of donating the collection to Fatu-O-Aiga Hope House. But since Cyclone Evan devastated parts of Samoa, the collection of goods is now its way to our sister islands instead.

“This was a joint effort with Pago Pago Malaeimi Ward of the LDS Church. They are sending a container of goods to Samoa and we decided we would link up with them,” said Assistant Coach of the Chargers Keiki Misipeka.

“The original plan was for the collection of goods to go to the Fatu-O-Aiga Hope House. But because of what happened during that time with the Cyclone hitting Samoa that caused a lot of devastation and problems for our Samoan brothers and sisters, we decided it was best for the Chargers team to donate to the people in Samoa,” he said.

Misipeka said that the Chargers players were so moved about what had happened over in Samoa, that they rose to the challenge by collecting not only cans of food, but clothes and other useful items as well for those affected by Cyclone Evan. He said that this past Monday was the deadline to get the goods together to be loaded on the container for shipment, but he was not sure exactly when the container would be shipped out.

Samoa News spoke to some of the young players of the Chargers who said that they were happy to help the people in Samoa who had been affected by the cyclone.

“I believe that this helped us out as a team, to work together for a great cause,” said one player.

“I hope the container makes it to them and helps out many families in Samoa,” said a Chargers teammate.

The Chargers will be playing in their first game of the AYFS Football season this coming Saturday at the Veterans Memorial Stadium, when they face the Buccaneers of Leone.
