ASHSAA sports update — Basketball and Baseball standings

The hottest team in the American Samoa High School Athletic Association’s (ASHSAA) Girls Varsity Basketball Division is the Faga’itua Vikings who have moved up to the third place slot in the standings right behind the division leading Tafuna Warriors and the Samoana Sharks who are in second place.

The Vikings booked their fourth straight win this past Friday when they defeated the Nu’uuli VocTech Wildcats by a score of 25-9. Next up for the Vikings is the Sharks who they will be playing today at Samoana High School. The other Varsity game scheduled for today is the Wildcats making a trip to take on the Fa’asao Marist Cougars. Both of these games have a scheduled starting time of 4:30 p.m.

The Warriors and Sharks continue their dominance over the division and despite the overall improvement of the Leone Lions and Cougars, the top two teams are pulling away with only the Vikings keeping pace.

Things could change today for the Vikings if they can defeat the Sharks. If the Vikings do take the victory today, they will move into the second place spot, knocking the Sharks one spot back to number three. If the Vikings lose, they will remain where they are. The last defeat for the Vikings came at the hands of the Sharks during the team’s first game of the season back on March 3 where the Sharks won by 20 points.

The Vikings have had ample time to improve and have the momentum going their way by winning four games straight. The Wildcats and South Pacific Academy Dolphins keep laying it all on the line each game, but are way out of the picture. These two teams are now battling it to see who does not finish last in the division.

The girls Junior Varsity Division had a busy weekend. On Saturday, the undefeated Cougars met up with the Warriors in a battle of the top two seeded teams. The Cougars came out of this one victorious as they downed the Warriors convincingly by a score of 22-14. The Sharks are now sitting in the last place spot by themselves. In a battle of the two bottom teams between the Sharks and Vikings on Saturday, it was the Vikings who won this one by two points, 16-14. Game three Saturday had the Cougars winning their second game of the day when they barely got by the Lions with a score of 18-16.

The only two loses for the Warriors were to the Cougars. The Cougars have a good chance to finish out the season undefeated. The next Junior Varsity games are this coming Saturday April 5 at Samoana High School. There are only two scheduled games to be played — the Warriors versus the Vikings and the Sharks versus the Lions.

Scheduled starting time is 8 a.m. The Junior Varsity season is scheduled to finish out on Saturday April 12.

Baseball Update

Baseball season continues to roll on despite a few games that were rained out. Last Saturday the defending champion Fa’asao Marist Crusaders had a forfeit win over the winless Vikings in the first game of the day. The first place Warriors had a good day when they rolled over the Lions 10-3. With the win, the Warriors were thrust into the top spot where they sit all alone. Game three had the Crusaders playing in their second game where they went down in defeat to the Sharks by a score of 1-0. If the Crusaders had won, they would have been tied for first place with the Warriors.

The next baseball games are this coming Saturday that will have the Lions versus the Crusaders in game one. Game two will see the Vikings taking on the Warriors, as game three will be the Sharks playing the Lions. All games are played at the Tony Solatia Baseball Field.

ASHSAA continues to send out its invitation to the public to come out and witness the young athletes of the territory compete in ASHSAA sporting events. Schedules are subject to change without notice.
