Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — Defending champs South Pacific Academy Dolphins is in the lead for the ASHSAA Girls’ varsity soccer season after three games, winning one and drawing the other two for five points.

Fa’asao-Marist (1-1-0), Faga’itua (1-1-0), and Samoana (1-1-1-) are tied for points with four each, with the Cougars ranked No. 2, followed by the Vikings and Sharks, respectively, according to their differential in goals.

The Leone Lions squad is fifth, followed by Tafuna at No. 6.  There are only six teams competing in the varsity division.

In the J-V division, only four teams are taking part in this year’s competition, with the Cougars (2-0-0) currently sitting at No. 1, Tafuna Warriors (1-0-0) at No. 2, followed by the Samoana Sharks (0-0-2) at No. 3, and Leone Lions (0-0-1) at No. 4.

Tafuna is the J-V defending champs from last year, and are in the mix for a repeat chance with a second place spot in the standings.

The season kicked off on January 24, 2019 and games are held every Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Pago Park Soccer Stadium.  The format is a two round-robin schedule for both divisions, with the team finishing with the most points to be crowned champion.

Nearly every varsity has a former youth international player on their squad, and these players are bringing up the level of the game as FFAS’ technical department is looking to put together a training squad for this year’s U-16 and U-19 women’s OFC qualifiers.

A few of them were part of the women’s senior national team that competed in Fiji last year during the OFC Women’s Nation’s Cup qualifiers, raising the number of very experienced players in the league.
