ASHSAA Fall Sports Recap

Here is a recap of the 2012-2013 American Samoa High School Athletic Association (ASHSAA) Fall sports that recently concluded with the ending of the girls Varsity and Junior Varsity volleyball season. Other Fall sports included Boys Futsal, Girls Softball, Boys Volleyball and Football.

Tafuna High School not only dominated the entire girls Varsity volleyball season with an unblemished record, they took the championship title as well with a two set victory over the Faga’itua Vikings who started the season off slow, but made a come from behind sprint, making the playoffs seeded at #3. In the Junior Varsity girls volleyball season, the Faga’itua Vikings were able to do the same as their Varsity counterparts and made a mad dash to the finish, to end the year with the best record in the division, giving them the championship title, despite the Nu’uuli Voc-Tech Wildcats dominating most of the season but faltering at the end.

In this year’s Boys Futsal season, the Samoana Sharks were able to go undefeated with one draw, as they were seeded #1 going into the championship title match up with the #2 seeded Warriors. In a close battle, the Sharks not only won the game for the championship trophy, they did it on their home court with a 5-4 victory over the Warriors.

In this year’s ASHSAA girls softball season, the Warriors appeared to be on their way to a championship season, as they were clearly the team to beat this year. They were in the perfect spot to defeat the defending champion, Fa’asao Cougars. They had the best record during the regular season and they were seeded #1 going into the playoffs and they were on a roll gaining momentum. But fate would not allow them to dethrone the #2 seeded and defending champions when these two teams met in the championship title game, with the Cougars coming out on top.

In Boys Volleyball, the Warriors once again had their foot in the door as the playoffs came around and was the favorite to take the championship trophy. In the Varsity championship game that featured the high powered #1 seeded Warriors and the #2 seeded Faga’itua Vikings did not live up to the ‘hype’ that everyone thought it would. What it did was surprise everyone when the Vikings walked away with a shocking victory over the Warriors, giving the Vikings the Varsity championship title. In the Junior Varsity Division, the Warriors earned the title when they had the best record at the end of the season.

In the football season, the Warriors knocked off the Leone Lions in the Varsity championship game. The Warriors were the favorite to win the championship trophy in many people’s mind from the start of the season. In the Junior Varsity Division, the Warriors earned their 5th championship title in row.

In this ASHSAA Winter sports season, the Warriors were able to accumulate a total of 4 championship titles in Varsity Football, Varsity Girls Volleyball, Junior Varsity Football and Junior Varsity Boys Volleyball. They are followed by the Vikings (Boys Varsity Volleyball/Girls Junior Varsity Volleyball), Cougars (Girls Softball) and Sharks (Boys Futsal).
