ASHSAA Baseball season underway

The American Samoa High School Athletic Association (ASHSAA) Baseball Season, is now underway, with games being played at the Tony Solaita Baseball field in Tafuna. This year, as last year, there are five teams competing, which include the Leone Lions, Fa’asao Marist Crusaders, Tafuna Warriors, Samoana Sharks and Nu’uuli Voc-Tech Wildcats.

The Faga’itua Vikings will not be fielding a team this year.

The Baseball Confederation of Oceania (BCO) Baseball Development Officer, Ray Brown is on island at this time and will be assisting with ASHSAA Baseball throughout the season.

Last year’s 2010-2011 champions, the Tafuna Warriors will be looking to repeat as champions once again in this year’s 2011-2012 season. Last year the Warriors went into the ASHSAA Baseball Championships not only as the underdogs, but with a losing record as well — at 4 wins and 5 losses, when they faced the undefeated and highly favored team of the Fa’asao Marist Crusaders. In a classic battle, hey defeated the Crusaders in a come from behind victory by a score of 9- 8, keeping the championship title at Tafuna High School. They were also the 2009-2010 champions and are looking to once again, keep the title at the home of the Warriors.

“I invite the public out to all of the games in support of these athletes. I want to thank all of the coaches in getting their teams ready for this year’s season and everyone else who helped out in preparation for this season,” said ASHSAA Baseball Coordinator Clayton Mahuka.
