Amaluia Youth hosts Taputimu Rugby Tourney Sat

Hong Kong Rugby fever is still in the air, and tomorrow (Sat. April 5) the Taputimu Rugby field will be buzzing with action as the CCCAS Amaluia Youth will host a 10-A-Side Touch Rugby tournament, offering all day fun for the whole family.

In a collaborative effort, sponsored by both ASG and the private sector, the Dept. of Youth and Women’s Affairs, along with Pritchard’s Bakery, the Department of Parks and Recreation, and the Fono’s House of Representatives are listed as the proud sponsors, and “great prizes” are being offered for Cup Winner, Plate, Bowl and Shield.

There will be a $250 entry fee, according to the ad which is running in today’s paper.

Action begins at 7:30a.m. and some of the teams who will be participating include the Taputimu Youth, Vailoa, Leone, Amaluia and Laulii Youth, along with two Golden Oldie teams.

“Come out and enjoy our pre-Flag Day Touch Rugby Tournament” say organizers, who promise a great day of Rugby competition for the whole family.

Even though the sport of Rugby has been in the territory for some quite time, it was recently given a big push when American Samoa’s National Team, Talavalu, qualified to take part in the IRB qualifier tournament in Hong Kong last week, putting American Samoa on the map in the sport of Rugby.

Even though it was a 7-A-Side that Talavalu took part in last week (and not the 10-A-Side Touch style that will be played tomorrow) Rugby fever still appears to be spreading across Tutuila. There is no doubt the ‘Rugby Fever’ had a lot to do with the recent trip to Hong Kong.

The organizers for tomorrow's event told Samoa News that “the main goal of the tournament is to continue the interest and love for the game in our youth and to use it as another avenue to succeed in a different sport other than those we are accustomed to — such as football and basketball, which are important sports as well.”

However, they note that Rugby can play the same role.

The CCCAS Amaluia Youth invites the public out to witness some great Rugby talent take to the field tomorrow and perhaps witness some future international stars taking center stage first right here in American Samoa.

Tomorrow's event will have a Cup winner, Plate winner, Bowl winner and Shield winner. For more information call 252-5735, or 688-1581.
