Newly-crowned Miss Aotearoa Marlena Martin of Rotorua is delighted to win the contest and the right to compete in the Miss South Pacific pageant in American Samoa in December.

"I'm privileged and honoured to be in this position and I plan on making Maori proud," Ms Martin said.

The 24-year-old, who is a support worker and teacher aide for her brain-injured sister Tui, said she gained a lot from participating in the pageant.

The contest was created to encourage young women to become closer to their culture and Ms Martin, who performed a Te Arawa action song, said she was taking Maori classes.
