Regional tourism plan subject of workshop Monday
Local stakeholders, including private and public sectors, will convene Monday at a 2-hour consulting workshop at the Tradewinds Hotel on the Pacific Regional Tourism Strategy (PRTS).
The strategy provides a framework for the development of Pacific tourism at a regional level for the next five years (2015 to 2019).
American Samoa’s involvement in this regional project stems from being readmitted into the South Pacific Tourism Organization, at last year’s meeting in Apia.
Some interesting data cited in the draft PRTS: visitor arrivals to the Pacific region have grown steadily over the last five years to reach 1.77 million in 2012 (from 1.49 million in 2007). However this represents only 1.6 percent of global arrivals. The gross value of tourism receipts for the countries covered by this Strategy is estimated to be between 2.5 US$ billion to 3.0 US$ billion in 2012.
The ASVB encourages those who have been invited to attend this important workshop to participate because it’s beneficial to the territory’s push to develop the tourism industry.
Because of the importance of this issue to our tourism development, a draft copy of the PRTS is posted with the online version of this story on: www.samoanews.com
