The American Samoa High School Athletic Association (ASHSAA) Boys and Girls Track and Field came to a head this week with their finals, resulting in the Tafuna High School Warriors Girls taking the girls’ championships, while for the boys, it was the Faga’itua High School Vikings Boys that walked away with the overall boys championship.

On Monday, Leone High School Junior Faresa Kapisi broke the old ASHSAA Boys 100 meter record of 11.4 seconds — he clocked in a time of 11.37 seconds.

Kapisi left the territory yesterday afternoon for Australia for three days to get ready to compete in the Indoor World Junior Championships that will taking place in Poland from March 5-10, where he will be competing in the 60 and 100 meters.

While in Australia, Kapisi will be training with a national coach who will escort him and be with him in Poland. After Poland, he will then be returning to Australia where he will compete in the Sydney Junior Championships in Australia from March 13-16.

According to the ASHSAA Head Coach, Valusia Talataina, he will meet up with Kapisi when he makes his trip back to Australia. Talataina said the Sydney Junior National Championships will be a qualifier to see if he will qualify for the World Youth Olympics that will be in China in August 2014.

The 16-year-old Kapisi also competed last year in the Oceania Championships in Tahiti where he earned a Bronze Medal in the 200 meters and placed 4th in the 400 meters. Talataina also said that one of the main goals they are looking at is the 2015 Pacific Games that will be in Papua, New Guinea next year.

At the end of ASHSAA season, the Physical of Education/Office of Curriculum, Instruction and Accountability (PE-OCIA) Coordinator Clayton ‘Boom’ Mahuka who coordinated  the ASHSAA Track and Field season stated he would like to thank Ene Kapisi from ASHSAA and Toleafoa Henry Tavake for their continued support in his effort to promote the sport on island and thanked everyone else that had a helping hand in running this year’s track and field meets.

“I am grateful for the patience and support of all our spectators and coaches as we did our best to give student athletes elevated levels of competition as we continue to identify talent and skill in this area for national and higher level competition,” said Mahuka.
