Hawaii Gas warns residents of email scam

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hawaii Gas is warning residents about a utility billing scam targeting consumers.

The company said its customer service center received calls from customers and non-customers saying they had gotten an email from "Energy Billing System." The email -- sent by DoNotReply@tross.co.uk -- notified the recipient that their energy bills were available to view online.

The email listed a fake account number, charges, amount due and payment due date.
Hawaii Gas said it does not have an option for customers to view bills online and advised customers and noncustomers to be cautious of emails they receive from third-party entities claiming to represent any utility company.

Customers have also reported receiving bill statements from Pacific Gas & Electric Company in California. According to Hawaii Gas, PG&E is aware of this scam and has communicated it on their website and through mainland news outlets.
