'Missed call' scam targets cell phone users

If you miss a call from an unknown number you may want to think twice before calling back, according to the Council of Better Business Bureaus.

It says people in the U.S. and Canada have filed complaints saying they've been stuck with unexpected charges after returning calls from strange numbers.

The return calls connect victims to expensive adult entertainment services or international chat lines.

Charges range from a few dollars to as much as $20.

Numbers used in the scam typically originate from area codes in the Caribbean.
