The 2013-2014 American Samoa High School Athletic Association (ASHSAA) Boys Varsity Basketball season had its first official regular season game this past Monday evening when the top two seeded teams met one another to start the season off.

The Samoana Sharks made a trip to the home of the Warriors in Tafuna, but once again walked away empty handed as the Warriors were victorious 40-17. This was the third time in a row that the Warriors defeated the Sharks, if you're counting the two Pre-Season tournament losses, which the Warriors handed the Sharks last week.

On opening day Monday, the aggressive style of play by the Warriors worked, as they continue to possess a mystique that seems to follow them each time they step onto the court, going all of the way back to the beginning of last year's season when they finished off the year as the champions.

On Monday, the Warriors were able to capitalize on the turnovers that plagued the Sharks and turn them into points for themselves while cruising to what appeared to be a fairly easy victory. The Sharks were not able to live up to this highly anticipated match-up and hype, leaving the door partially open for the rest of the teams to step up and possibly step in, if the Sharks continue to play under-par.

The other game on opening day saw the Leone Lions going up against the Faga’itua Vikings. These two teams did not fare so well in the Pre-Season tournament last week.  Apparently they were concentrating more on assessing players than in being in the win column last week.

On Monday, both teams came out storming, hitting points from outside of the perimeter and under the boards in an attempt to show that they deserved the respect that has eluded them the past couple of years. In a highly competitive game, it was the Lions that took the win by a score of 43-39.

For Tuesday's games between the Fa’asao Marist Crusaders and the Nu’uuli Voc-Tech Wildcats, and the Sharks versus the Lions, Samoa News was not able to retrieve the scores as of press time.

Today’s games will have the Vikings and Crusaders meeting at the Malaeloa gymnasium, while the Wildcats play the South Pacific Academy Dolphins with the venue yet to be determined. All Varsity games have a scheduled starting time of 4:30 p.m.

The Boys Junior Varsity Basketball season that will begin this coming Saturday, has changed its venue. Originally scheduled to start play at the Malaeloa gym on Saturday, opening day will now be at the Samoana High School gymnasium on Saturday with a scheduled starting time of 8:00 a.m.

ASHSAA invites the public out to all of these games in support of our athletes. The schedule is subject to change without notice to Samoa News or the public.
