No tsunami generated from quake near Tonga


The National Weather Service in Pago Pago has confirmed that a 6.1 quake occurred this morning (Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013) close to the Tonga islands, or about 330 miles south-west of American Samoa.

Hans Malala with the Weather Service says the public should not panic and local officials have been informed by Hawai’i officials that no tsunami was generated.

He also says the quake occurred around 8:06a.m. local time.

Some residents felt the quake which lasted a few seconds.
