Samoa Bowl XI sporting events start Christmas Day

American Samoa is hosting the annual Samoa Bowl, starting today, Christmas Day. This is the 11th All Star event for American Samoa and will end on the 30th of this month. According to the Samoa Bowl Committee, the All Star High School athletes and coaches for Volleyball and  Football teams were set to arrive last night from Utah, California, and Hawai’i.
The traditional “Back to the Roots” Culture Day was held at the Su’igaula Park on Tuesday, starting with an Ava Ceremony, taking place at 9a.m. The ceremony was hosted by the Office of Samoan Affairs. Following the ceremony this year, the traditional Samoan dance (siva Samoa) was taught to the All Star visitors by Salote Fanene.
A trip to the Tau’ese Ocean Center was also scheduled, as well as a special moment for the visitors — with a close up view of “fautasi” activities.
Volleyball — The first competition of this year’s Samoa Bowl starts off with volleyball games, kicking off Christmas morning at the American Samoa Community College gymnasium at 9am, and will continue  towards the end of the week. Head  Coach for the A.S. Women’s All Star team is Meleisha Purcell Telefoni, who trained the Leone Lions team this year.  Joining her is Josie Muasau. The Men’s All Star Teams (2) are coached by Tafuna High School’s Iose Muasau.
Football — This year’s Samoa Bowl Football Game will kick off this Saturday (Dec, 28. 2013) and will start right after the conclusion of the opening ceremony which is scheduled for 10a.m.  (Entrance fee will be the usual at the gate)
The American Samoa All Star Football Team is coached by Tafuna High School’s Head Coach, Oakland Salave’a, who led the Varsity Warriors to a historical Undefeated Championship Title this year — their second “undefeated” title in a row.
