HONOLULU – Crewmembers from Oahu based Coast Guard units delivered Christmas presents to 300 children at Prince Jonah Kuhio Elementary School, a Honolulu school that draws from an underprivileged area of the island, Friday.

Dozens of Coast Guardsmen took wish lists written by the children and collected by their teachers, purchased gifts and wrapped them. The crewmembers then delivered the gifts to the school and attended a presentation by the children, who sang and performed holiday-themed routines for their families and the Coast Guard.

"This is the fourth year in a row that we have participated in the local angel tree project," said Chief Petty Officer Heather Bové, who coordinated the event for the Fourteenth Coast Guard District. "It is truly the most wonderful time of year especially when you get to see the light of hope in the children's eyes. Working with Principal Evelyn Hao and her staff was an amazing experience and watching the children burst with excitement, knowing they would receive a gift, was a gift in itself!"

The event was coordinated through the Coast Guard's Partnership in Education program. Throughout the year, Coast Guard Oahu based units support the school's science nights, robotics nights, holiday gift giving and collection of school supplies. PIE was established in 1991 in accordance with The National and Community Service Act of 1990. Its purpose is to promote excellence in education, create opportunities to enhance students' academic abilities and expose students to career opportunities within the Coast Guard.
