Samoa's Taufusi market neat, tidy – and quieter
Three weeks after the Taufusi Market opened, some stall owners are pleased with their decision to move there.
“The most important thing I like about this market is because it’s clean and it doesn’t smell like everywhere else,” said Tanielu Otemai, of Nofoali’i.
“There are a lot of people who come here every day to shop because it is very neat and very tidy and well organised.
“It’s always busy here and it is very convenient for the public especially because cars can just drive through from one side to the other.
“It’s not only clean but it’s also safe for the farmers from the sun and rainy days.
Asked how much he was paying to use the space, he explained, “It’s $10 a block but I’m using two blocks so I’m paying $20 a day,” he said.
When the market first opened, Project Manager Fata Lolagi told Samoa Observer that the stall price was to be $15 per day with an introductory rate of $10 a day.
Mr. Otemai explained that people were requesting if the rate could be kept cheaper.
And as a result, the price went down from $15 to $10 per day.
Mr. Otemai spends the whole week at the market in order to sell as well as look after his produce. He does this at $20 per day, except for the weekends, as he wants to go home to his family.
He was at the Toleafoa Market before it was taken down, but when the new Taufusi Market opened Mr. Otemai applied for a block to use.
Another seller, who owns a stall for his craft outlet, was also impressed.
“The place is very neat and tidy, not only that but it’s very convenient for the public.
It’s easy for buses to come here and there are also shelters for people to rest and wait for the buses.
“I came here because I own a block at the flea market at Savalalo but I heard that the flea market was going to be taken down by February of next year. I know that this is a safe place for me to do a stall because it’s not that noisy with school kids,” says Mr. Lauofo.
