Samoa: Mother charged in death of newborn
The Police have chaged a woman with infanticide following the gruesome discovery of her deceased newborn son in Vaitele Fou last week.
The body of the child was found when he was dragged into a family’s property by one of their dogs.
Acting Police Commissioner, Afamasaga Michael So’onalole said the Faleata Police charged the young woman last Wednesday.
He said Police are witholding the identity of the woman until she appears in Court.
“She is now released on bail by the court registrar and will appear on 22 October 2013 in the District Court,” he said.
Meanwhile, the body of the newborn baby boy remains at the Tupua Tamasese Meaole Hospital morgue while the Police are continuing their investigation.
Last week, Mr. Si’itia said his brother saw one of their dogs come running into their gate with food in its mouth.
“He thought it was a normal piece of meat but when he called us to come to take a closer look, I realised it was a baby with no arms,” he said.
The baby boy, Mr. Si’itia said, was already dead.
He said the smell and his physical appearance indicated that he had just been born.
