MUSIC VIDEO: LORDE FIRST KIWI SOLO ARTIST TO TOP BILLBOARD CHART
New Zealand teenage singer-songwriter Lorde has become the first Kiwi solo artist to top the US Billboard chart.
Royals, the first release from Ella Yelich O'Connor - who performs under the name Lorde - overtook hits by more established stars Miley Cyrus and Katy Perry to go to number one last night.
Lorde, who is from Auckland, turns 17 next month, and is the youngest artist to hold the US number one in more than 25 years.
"It feels like a combination of my birthday, Christmas and washing my hair after a month of not doing so," she told Billboard.
"[I'm] very, very grateful for everyone's love and kind words."
Lorde says Royals was inspired by images of US rappers and said the lyrics behind the minimal beat took her less than 30 minutes to write.
