Health Dept continues crack downs
The Department of Health inspectors have done it again, closing the doors of another downtown restaurant last Friday, after shutting down operations for Metro Enterprises on the ground floor of the Lumana'i Building and later, Fiafia Restaurant on the first floor of the Samoa News building.
DOH inspectors have been out in full force, conducting random inspections of restaurants and eateries across the territory, checking for cleanliness, among other things. Samoa News understands the restaurants that have been closed down by DOH over the past month were all found to be in violation of sanitation standards, to include mold and mildew in the kitchen area, poor ventilation, improper plumbing, dirt and grime where food is prepared, as well as cockroaches and rat trails.
In addition, some restaurants were discovered to be putting pots and pans of food on the floor, as the kitchen spaces are very small and there is hardly any room to move around, let alone prepare food.
This past Friday, Sept. 6, DOH inspectors closed down Matai Restaurant on the ground floor of the Fagatogo Square on the sami side. There is no re-open date listed on the DOH notice posted on the doors and windows of the restaurant. The Hawaiian Bakery, located in Nu'uuli, was also shut down due to a DOH inspection last week, and continued to be closed as of yesterday morning.
In the meantime, three of the four restaurants from the row of eateries facing the StarKist Samoa main office building have re-opened for business since they were ordered to shut down operations last month. Fiafia Restaurant has also re-opened.
Restaurants that are shut down by DOH inspectors are given a certain number of days to get things cleaned up and squared away before a follow-up inspection is conducted.
