Investment to develop traditional Pacific sports in New Zealand
The Otara-Papatoetoe Local Board will invest $US5.7 million dollars towards a sports park to help develop two traditional Pacific Sports.
Facilities for Samoa's traditional "kilikiti" sport as well as Waka Ama will be based at Ngati Otara Park.
Kilikiti is Samoa's own unique version of Cricket and Waka Ama is the sport of Canoe racing.
Chairman of the Otara Rugby League Club Willie Maea says they're excited to receive funding that will encourage more members of the community to get involved in Pacific sport.
"[This] is just to start us off to build a big enough complex that can house the 9-10 sporting codes that are interested in coming into the area." he said.
"And of course that...is just to ensure the playing services will cater for all the different sports right throughout the seasons."
Almost 90 per cent of the athletes who play for the local sports organisation are Pacific Islanders.
