Senator claims ASG should get profit from subleases
Sen. Soliai Tuipine Fuimaono is urging the Department of Commerce to remove companies who are no longer in business from the Tafuna Industrial Park and make space for other vendors.
Soliai’s verbal request was made last week during the DOC’s fiscal year 2014 budget hearing, where DOC director Keniseli Lafaele fielded several inquiries from lawmakers, some of whom were concerned with Industrial Park, which is overseen by DOC.
Soliai urged Lafaele to look at leases held by companies who are no longer in businesses and remove them from the industrial park to allow other companies to lease these parcels of land.
He said he is aware of one company that is out of business but subleasing the land to another business thereby collecting money and then turning around and paying ASG only the required lease payment and pocketing any profits made from the sublease.
The Ituau senator later told Samoa News that this is not a fair practice because this is taking away revenues from the government, which needs all the money it can get at this point.
